Not at all. While Shibari has roots in erotic and kink culture. Apart from the hand craft, this course focuses on the relational and sensual aspects – trust, communication, and connection. You don’t need to identify as “kinky” to enjoy it. Many couples join simply to explore touch, polarity, and creativity in new ways.
It’s about curiosity, not labels.
Yes – Shibari can be a deeply healing practice when approached with clarity, intention, and care.
Throughout the course, you’ll be guided to identify your specific intention for each practice. One of the gifts of Shibari is that it can hold many intentions, from playfulness and intimacy, to healing and emotional release.
If you carry deeper trauma, it’s essential to explore the ropes with a partner who truly understands and respects your intention. When both partners are attuned, when there’s safety, presence, and space for emotions, Shibari can become a powerful tool for reclaiming agency and releasing stored feelings.
However, if one partner is focused mainly on pleasure, or if communication isn’t clear, the experience can instead feel overwhelming or reactivating.
Trust yourself. You know your own pace, and that being clear with your needs is the foundation of the practice.
This is where the creative aspects of Shibari are endless. I’ve tied with people in wheel chairs, without leg mobility, and over 70 years of age.
Yes, there might be some of the invitations in the course where you can’t follow the exact instructions. Does that hinder us from finding our ways?
Maybe you want to be on a chair instead of the ground, or standing up instead of kneeling.
When the longing is there we will find our way.
Not necessarily. Shibari can be erotic, but it doesn’t have to be sexual. In this course, ropes are used as a tool for connection — to slow down, build trust, and explore presence, polarity, and play.
Some couples experience it as sensual and intimate, others as meditative or deeply emotional. You choose the tone and intention that feels right for your relationship.
The ropes on the body in itself, and the patterns you’ll learn, does not cause pain.
That said, Shibari can have many intentions – it can be about connection, sensation, and presence, focusing on pleasure. And ropes can also be used to explore safe pain play in a controlled and consensual way.
In the course, you’ll learn how to communicate clearly, finding shared intentions, and create experiences that are both exciting and safe – whether your focus is gentle sensation or exploring edges together.
It can feel vulnerable when your desires are new or unfamiliar to your partner – and guiding them there can feel overwhelming. That’s one of the gifts of this course: you’ll have guidance not only for the rope practices themselves, but also for the conversations that help build safety, ease, and mutual understanding. Together, you can explore, play, and connect with confidence, even if one of you is completely new to these experiences.
